Flexible Working vs. Traditional Working

For many years, businesses have stuck to the conventional operating hours which are about 8 hours per day on average. But in today’s world, many companies support and offer flexible working hours as an alternative for their employees leaving the concept of traditional working behind in the dust. The standard traditional working hours are usually between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for most of the organisations whereas in flexible working, the hours of the job usually remain the same but the time slots are not fixed. Both of them have their own pros and cons which have been discussed below.

Flexible Working

Flexible working is all about businesses providing their employees with power over their working schedules. So much so that employees may also be able to choose the number of hours they are willing to provide their service to the business. Their working hours mostly depends on the amount of work they are assigned with i.e. their hours are flexible but they must complete their job before the project deadline.

Pros

  • The main advantage of flexible working is that the person is able to make his own working schedule according to his needs and requirements, this is why Crowdville is so popular among people who fancy flexible working!
  • Most of the workers who have flexible working hours work from their homes. In this way, the organization and the employees are able to reduce a lot of travel costs as well as this way they are able to save a lot of time which is wasted and reduce the stress caused while commuting to the office.
  • Being able to work at the time one feels easier and comfortable mostly results in increased job performance. This is one of the basic reasons why modern people opt for flexible working.
  • It also results in a lot a less absenteeism as well as staff turnover.
  • The organisations may take overtime services from their employees with more ease.

Cons

  • Most of the jobs in today’s world that offer flexible working hours for their employees are not permanent thus reducing the sense of job security for the employee.
  • Being at home all day long may give the society the impression that one is unemployed.
  • With great ease comes great responsibility as well. In flexible working hours, you may even have to work way past bedtime to complete the job assigned.
  • Employees’ productivity is vague to the organisation.

Traditional Working

In traditional working, the employers and the employees must work for the defined set of hours according to the organization’s rules and regulations. They must complete a certain amount of working hours a week, mostly in their working place. Traditional working is still the most adopted method for organizational working.

Pros

  • The organization is able to organize the office environment in a much better way by setting the working hours themselves for their employees.
  • The jobs are mostly permanent for their employees giving them a sense of security about their jobs thus increasing their job satisfaction.
  • The employees’ productivity is transparent to the company.
  • Employees are able to work much better when collaborated as a team as communication becomes a lot easier when working face to face rather than communicating via a web communication medium.
  • Regularity is the main component for both the employers and the employees

Cons

  • Employees may face some difficulty regarding the working hours especially in cases of emergencies causing absenteeism, stress and low morale.
  • Organization may have to bear with their transportation costs.
  • For the organisation, the employees may not be available all of the time which may cause the organisation some tension.

With both ways of working having their own pros and cons, a company needs to see how those pros and cons reflect with their vision. A better match will lead to a better run organisation.
